We had a problem logging on at first. You need to "click reply" on the first email that was sent after you registered, and ask Tim to help get you in the system. We noticed that evey one on page 3 on the member list has not posted except us. We think they may be having problems logging on also. Hope this helps.

Hello Everyone! This is Tim Dutton, the forum administrator.

I noticed the report that some people may not be able to successfully register and log in, so I decided to test it again. I completed the registration process and was able to successfully log in as a new user.

Some key things to remember:

1- Choose a username and password that are easy to remember. I don't know for sure, but the system may have problems with spaces and strange characters in the user name. Stick to letters to be safe.
2- Use a real email address, and double check that you spelled it correctly
3- You will receive an activation/welcome email AFTER you register but BEFORE your account is active. You WILL NOT be able to log in until you click on the authorization/activation link you got in your welcome email.
4- If clicking the activation link does not work, try it again - you may have to copy the address of the link and paste it into your browser in order to make it work.
5- And of course, you may always send me a message if you have any kind of trouble logging in. Send a private message to twotone (me - Tim) by clicking here or email me at tim[ AT ]theduttons[ D0T ]com. Of course, I have changed my email address so bots can't read it - change the [ AT ] and [ D0T ] back to @ and .

The problem with bots.

You may notice some of the hoops you have to jump through when registering or as a new user. We use the phpbb bulletin board system which is one of the most popular ones. Unfortunately, being widely used means that it is the object of attacks by people or 'robots' (or bots for short). A robot is a computer program that surfs the web looking for phpbb boards in this case. It attempts to register for the purpose of writing spam posts to advertise medicine or other less appealing things, or just to post spam and create damage.

You will notice the image verification when you register. This is to prove that you are a human and not a robot - it pretty much keeps the robots out 100%. In the event that a bot gets registered or a malicious person registers, there are limitations placed on new accounts - certain information that you may have included in your registration such as a web page address will not show up on your user profile until you have 3-5 posts. Likewise, you cannot post a web address or link in any posts until you have 3-5 successful posts. Hopefully this requires too much effort for malicious people and they will just leave.

Some users have done a noteworthy job of watching for malicious or spamming users, kind of like our own neighborhood watch. If you see bogus or spam posts, please let me know by pm or email (see my contact info above) so that we can keep the Duttons forum a safe and informative place.
